See where your leads come from

Which campaign brought in the next customer enquiry? Keep the lead source and UTM parameters with the opportunity in Customer Connect, so the context stays with you when you make the next contact.

UTM parameters are small additions to a link that describe where a visitor came from. Three details help you distinguish different traffic sources.

Source – where from?

For example, Google, LinkedIn or your newsletter. This information is passed as utm_source.

Medium – how?

For example, a paid ad or an email. Use utm_medium to distinguish different types of traffic.

Campaign – which initiative?

For example, an autumn offer or an event invitation. utm_campaign groups links belonging to the same campaign.

Keep the source when an enquiry becomes an opportunity

When a connected web form sends tracking details, Customer Connect can save the source, medium and campaign with the opportunity. The landing page and referring page can also be included when supplied.

This gives you context for the customer’s enquiry and information to help you follow up on where leads come from. Continue with the owner, next contact and deal status in your usual sales workflow.

How the lead source reaches your CRM

  1. Tag your campaign links. Use consistent names for source, medium and campaign in ads, newsletters and other messages.
  2. Have the form pass on the details. Connect the form so that tracking information reaches Customer Connect with the customer’s enquiry.
  3. Follow up on the opportunity. The details are saved with the enquiry, alongside the information for the ongoing customer conversation.

An example: from Google ad to quote request

You advertise an autumn offer and tag the link with the source google, medium cpc and campaign autumn_offer.

A visitor clicks the ad and completes your connected form. If the form passes on these values, the opportunity in Customer Connect can be linked to that source and campaign.

The salesperson receives the customer’s enquiry to follow up. You also keep the information about how the contact began.

Frequently asked questions about lead tracking

What’s the difference between a lead source and UTM parameters?

The lead source describes where an enquiry came from. UTM parameters specify the source, medium and campaign in a link, so this information can reach the CRM when the visitor sends an enquiry.

Is adding UTM parameters to the link enough?

The form or integration also needs to capture and forward the details. Start by testing a tagged link and a form submission, and check that the values reach Customer Connect.

What happens if tracking details are missing?

Campaign details that aren’t sent cannot be saved from the enquiry. Other information, such as the referring page, may be available, but it doesn’t always provide the same level of detail as UTM parameters.

Does this replace web analytics?

Lead tracking connects source information to incoming opportunities. Use your web analytics tool to explore visits and behaviour on your website.
